Quick Fixes
INCREASING DETAIL Adobe Photoshop:
1. Make a duplicate layer of the image - command J
2. Set the blending mode
Using drop down mode in Layers palette change the Blending mode for your duplicate layer from Normal to Overlay.
3. Apply the High pass filter
This is found under Filter - More - High Pass
4. Pixel size 10 or lower.
5. Adjust Opacity
Fine tune the effect of the High Pass filter by adjusting the Opacity of the adjustment layer. Decreasing the opacity allows the master layer below to show through.
LEVELS - Adjustment Layer
Use levels to adjust exposure and contrast
Levels lets you adjust the shadows, highlights and midtones independently (it does this by using an editable histogram)
1. SET THE BLACK POINT
- At the left end of the histogram (shadows) is a black slider control. Move this to the right to darken your shadows in your image without affecting the highlights
2. SET THE WHITE POINT
- At the right end of the histogram (the highlights) is a white slider that controls the brightness of highlights. Move the slider to the left to brighten light areas without affecting the shadows.
3. SET THE MIDPOINT
- At the center of the levels histogram is a gray, midtone slider. This controls the overall brightness of the image.
CURVES - Adjustment Layer
The aim is to change the line into a curve to modify the shadow and highlights.
1. ADJUST HIGHLIGHTS
- adding a control point to the top right end of the curve allow you to adjust the highlights in an image. When you move the curve up, they brighten; when you move the curve down, they darken
2. ADJUST THE SHADOWS
- by adding a control point to the lower left end of the curve. Drag the point downward to darken the shadows, or drag it upward to lighten them.
DODGE and BURN:
The goal of this method is to selectively darken and lighten areas of your image.
1. Hold down the option button and click on new layer
2. Name layer Dodge Burn, colour-none, Mode-Overlay and check box “Fill with Overlay-neutral (50% grey)”.
3. Select paint brush tool, set colour pallet to black and white, make sure your brush has soft edges, set your brush tool opacity to under 10%. Then genially and carefully dodge (brighten) specific areas of your image and Burn (darken). This method is great for bringing out drama in skies, or darkening edges of images to highlight focal areas.
See the tutorial under the Photoshop Editing tap for further detail on this method.
HUE and SATURATION - Adjustment Layer
The aim is to change the line into a curve to modify the shadow and highlights.
1. HUE - the colour
2. SATURATION - intensity
3. LIGHTNESS - brightness
You can also isolate and adjust the intensity of specific hues by clicking on , selecting an area in your image and dragging to the right or left to increase or decreasing the intensity of that hue.
