Big Idea - How can I reference the photographic work of  Shelly Wildeman and transform her ideas in the service of a larger, personal vision in which my “voice” is prominent?

"My interest as a photo-based artist is in the passage of time, nostalgia and memory. Depicting these themes in various parts of the world demonstrates the universality of the experience........... By combining several scenes and overlaying them to create one image comprising several moments – the experience of the single documentary instant is multiplied, letting the viewer feel the movement within the photo."

Learning Outcomes:  Students will learn how to capture multiple images from one vantage point. The location will be important, capturing movement is key and exposure control/stop action is crucial.

Part 1

You will create a Planning worksheet to come up with your idea for your project. This is on your Google Classroom.

Part 2

When you are done the Planning sheet, you can practice the editing technique with the photographs I have attached on Google Classroom with the tutorial I have linked there.

Part 3

Shooting Assignment:  Find 3 different locations which are busy with the hustle and bustle of life. From a good vantage point, take multiple shots (25 – 30 exposures) of the activity hand holding your camera but moving it as little as possible. At least one location should be at Sentinel (crowded hallway, foyer, cafeteria, courtyard etc)

Site Considerations:

  • An open public space is important with few obstructions so the subjects become the focal points and landscape/structure remains stable.

  • An Engaging location/viewpoint.

  • A location that will speak to the "passage of time, nostalgia and memory" .

Presentation

Hand in a contact sheet of each of your 3 locations (approx. twenty images each)

Part 4 - For this assignment you will use Adobe Photoshop and masking to combine your sequences into a single image.  I will demo this process.  Desaturating, use of gradients, blend modes and dodge and burn techniques will be explored to create a ghost like effect.

Evaluation - Create two layered compositions. For each, choose 5 exposures from one location, and using Adobe Photoshop layer and mask each. Use the brush tool and shades of grey to work into each mask to expose aspects of the images below. Make sure to work on a canvas that is 13” by 19" and 300 resolution.
