Lesson #2: In Motion - CHRONOPHOTOGRAPHY
Big Idea - Use your understanding of how to stop/freeze motion to create an images in which multiple actions of one single event are viewed in a single image. How am I going to bring my personal "voice" to this design problem? What is the story I am trying to tell (NARRATIVE)?
This will involve you setting your camera to continuous shooting mode, shutter speed priority and make sure your shutter speed is fast enough to completely stop action. You may have to adjust your ISO depending on the lighting conditions and your shutter speed will be dependant on how fast the action is that you are trying to shoot. Then continuously shoot the action from start to finish capturing all aspects of the movement from start to finish. It will be important that you move your camera as little as possible while shooting, you may want to use a tripod.
-
Try multiple times - from different viewpoints and of different actions/subjects.
-
Check and make sure your exposures are excellent - this will minimize the amount of editing required.
Part 2 of this assignment will be to use photo shop and masking to combine your best sequence into and single image. I will demo this process but check out this video below, we will be using the same process.
Presentation/Evaluation
-
Multiple contact sheets that display your understanding of BOTH the technical requirements required for successful exposure control/stop action AND multiple/creative/inventive ways to solve the design problem presented. Please include captions - shutter speed, f-stop, ISO and date on contact sheets and save as PDF.
-
One jpeg sized, 13" by 19" at 300 dpi of your combined sequence that you created in photoshop using masks.
-
High quality images will be printed.

Lesson 2B - Motion - Out of Bounds Effect
Big Idea - To creativity enhance a your motion images to speak to the action using Adobe Photoshop the "Out of the frame or Out of bounds effect".
Inquiry - How can I purposely make creative/compositional choices to enhance the impact of a photograph?
Goal
-
Present two images that you manipulated using the out of frame effect (see tutorial above). This technique lends itself nicely to action images because it accentuates the action captured in the image. You can use images that you shot in part one of lesson 2 or if you have another image that you think will lend itself well to this editing method you can use it.
-
Make sure your images are sized 8.5" by 11" and at 300 DPI
