Lesson #13 Landscape - Cityscape
Big Idea - Using Adobe Photoshop - how will I layer urban and natural landscapes to create a social/environmental comment?
Part 1 - The primary purpose of this assignment is to create interesting and affecting photographs of natural landscapes and people-made cityscapes. Goal - Gathering, exploring and capturing.
Cityscapes: Human’s influence on the landscape through architectural structures. Explore how human’s influence has shaped the environment we live in. It will be important that you develop a definition of the term "cityscapes" because this will add meaning and dimension to your photographs. Try out different viewpoints (high and low) making sure your images have a strong Horizon line.
Possible Location Ideas:
-
Bridges showing land and water masses as well as unique angles.
-
Monuments or buildings and surroundings
-
Dams
-
Cityscapes
-
Structures in the process of being built
Landscapes: Natural landscapes with minimal human intervention/footprint. Think about viewpoint, shoot from higher elevations as well as get low to exaggerate scale. Consider lighting, morning or late afternoon when the natural light enhances textures and creates shadows/contrast. Make sure your images have a strong Horizon line.
Possible Location Ideas:
-
Waterfalls
-
Mountain scenes
-
Lake scenes
-
Open fields,
-
Ocean views
Presentation: Students will submit 2 contact sheets 40 images in total. 20 images cityscape and 20 images landscapes. - 4 edited jpegs (2 landscapes and 2 cityscapes) - 300 resolution.
- The edited images should be the ones that you plan to use for part two. Must sharpen, increase saturation, increase contrast using curves, burn edges slightly.
Lesson 13: Landscapes and Cityscapes – Social Commentary
Part 2 - Using Adobe Photoshop - to layer urban and natural landscapes to create a social comment.

Layering, masking, cloning, gradients, filters, contrast control, colour balance, etc. All images must be original to the author.
Presentation:
