Photography 11
Lesson #7 - Alphabet
Big Idea: How am I going to photograph all the letters in the alphabet without using actual letters as my subject?
Assignment: This is like a scavenger’s hunt, you will need to constantly scan your surroundings for photo opportunities. This is an exercise which is designed to train you not just "look" but to "see" and should result in a better eye for photographs. Your goal will be to illustrate the alphabet by photographing shapes that can be interpreted as a letters. Exposure control and simplicity of background will of great importance for clarity and unity because all of these images will be presented as a singular unit/image. You may need to edit your images to both enhance and aid in creating unification of your final presentation.
Presentation:
- 2 contact sheets, 20 images each, demonstrating your problem solving techniques and showing multiple attempts at solution. Please include aperture, camera, shutter speed, ISO, date.
- A photomontage of your alphabet letters/shapes sized 8.5”by11” created using InDesign and exported as a .pdf file. Your images will be presented side by side, five across and six down. Size your individual images to 1.5” by 1’5” using Adobe Photoshop and save each - named the letter it represents. Then "file place" into your indesign document (see above example). Use the text tool to place your name in the white space on the bottom right or use your images to create your name.
Images will be graded on;
-
exposure control
-
camera handling techniques
-
composition - background simplicity, depth of field
-
the ability to capture shapes that successfully display the letters of the alphabet
