Big Idea: How can colour harmony affect overall mood? 

Learning goal

To investigate colour and composition.

         - Compositional strategies are used to enhances viewer interest.

         - Colour adds depth, emotion, and context to the photos.

Learning Outcomes:  

  • To apply an understanding of compositional rules.  

  • To explore various colour harmonies   

  • To apply an understanding of depth of field working in aperture mode. 

 Editing

  • Using Adobe Photoshop to learn how to use an overlay layer to dodge and burn.

  • Using Adobe Photoshop to learn how adjust hue and saturation enhance an image.  

  • Using Adobe Photoshop to learn how to sharpen aspect of an image. 

  • Use of the eyedropper tool to pull dominate colours from images, increase canvas size and create a palette. 

Assignment: Discover the magic of colour composition in photography by learning harmony rules and colour psychology to create images that evoke emotion.

Part 1 - Working with compositional rules (leading lines, rule of thirds, framing etc.) Shoot images the scream colour! Explore, Explore, Explore!!!!

Then - Edit, analyze, examine and extract dominate colours (in class demo).

Part 2 

Presentation 

  • 3 jpeg files - Your best compositions showing your exploration of a variety of colour harmonies (3 of the 5 below).  

  • All must be edited to enhance using the above methods,

  • Dominant colours extracted and arranged in a palette either along the side or bottom of the image (Refer to in class demo and above examples).

  • Label each with the colour harmony explored.

    • Secondary

    • Primary 

    • Complementary 

    • Analogous Colours - Cool 

    • Analogous Colours - Warm

  • Contact sheet of 20 images that displays your multiple attempts at solution.

Complementary Colours - Blues and Yellows

Analogous Colours - Cool

Analogous Colours - Warm

Primary Colors: Red, yellow, and blue are what we call “pure colors.” They are not created by the combining of other colors.

Secondary Colors: A 50/50 combination of any two primary colors.

Example: Red + Yellow = Orange.

Complementary Colours - Two colors that are on opposite sides of the color wheel. This combination provides a high contrast and high impact color combination – together, these colors will appear brighter and more prominent.

Tertiary Colors: A combination of a primary color and secondary color at various ratios. Example: Blue + Green = Anywhere from a turquoise to dark green.

Analogous Colors - sit next to each other on the color wheel. These can often a warm or cool vibe
