DWELLINGS

Big Idea - How are our ideas of home connected to structures, spaces and collective memory?  How am I going to explore a collective memory from my childhood through the use of symbols, scale, found objects and hierarchy?

Dwellings

Defined - Shelter, structure, an interface between humanity and the natural world.

Dwellings also can be defined as;

A Place of Collective Memory and Story

Part 1 - Research

1. Reflect on a childhood memory and in your sketchbook write it out.  Then circle all the important symbolic objects within your story.

2.  Ask those around you who were involved in the memory to tell the story from their perspective and make note of the differences between your story and theirs of the same event.

- Record on the opposite page of your sketchbook.

- Circle all the important symbolic objects within their interpretations.

Michael Hough

“I am interested in junk drawers, those repositories of miscellaneous found objects in most kitchens. Each object has a story to tell and when combined give a glimpse into the owners life.’

“Gathered in my studio, office and home are thousands of found objects,” he said. “There are bones, machine elements, furniture parts, toys and found ceramic objects. Each has a story.”
