What do 3D facial expression look like when the eyes are closed?

  • When free from the eyes as the focal point - how can I examine and exaggerate facial features to read as a specific emotion?

  • What "ups and downs" need to be exaggerated? Where do I stretch, where do I add?

  • Think - what happens to facial areas when we smile, frown or cry? Create the emotion yourself and take a selfie for reference.

Method

  1. Create 2 pinch pots, add some dry pieces of clay inside, bevel edges, join (slip and score).

  2. Create a finished oval shape by using a rib and paddle.

  3. Score out proportions on surface

Concentrate on the big ups and downs

4. Pull some clay forward to form the chin,

5. Push in for the eye sockets dragging to the edge of the face.

6. Add a coil for the nose and blend.

7. Create and add coils for lips making sure to blend into the skin but careful not to touch where the lips meet.

8. Add clay to the upper lip to join lip up and into the nose.

9. Through this process your will start shaping the nose by cutting into the clay and pulling up to from nostles.

10. Add triangular shape of clay for cheeks.

Make sure to keep rotating your head and viewing it from all angles.  It should stay in a rounded shape throughout your process.
