Big Idea: How can traditions, perspectives, world views, and stories can be shared through aesthetic experiences.

  • Use of sgraffito to create a detailed and textured surface.

Part 1

Sketchbook Research

Answer the following questions both visually and written. 

  1. What is the surrealist movement?

  2. How did World War 1 influence the birth of the surrealist movement?

  3. How did surrealism embrace the unconscious mind when creating art?

  4. Define automatism?

  5. How did surrealist artists make use of the following image development strategies?

  • Dislocation

  • Juxtaposition

  • Transformation

  • Scale

  • Levitation

  • Transparency

In Class Project

Part 2

Design

Using a piece to tracing paper cut to size to "steal" imagery and build your dream inspired surrealist design (demo will be given in class).

 

Important design elements; 

  • Overlapping imagery - elements need to tuck under other elements in order to create an unified design.

  • Scale - Make big and Make small - Exaggerate and minimize to create focal point.

  • Use of expressive line and textures

  • Fill your plate - You design need to engage the entire surface.  

  • Variety
