ASSIGNMENT:

YOUR TASK IS TO CREATE A FREE FORM CERAMIC FORM USING COILS. 
​
When working with coil you are working with LINE.
Line can convey a variety of characteristics; 
  • Anxious: small form, timid lines, fragile, empty or hollow

  • Aggressive: sharp angles, heavy or dense body, jagged lines, bold textures

  • Joyful: energetic diagonal lines, light foot, playful lines

Sketch some possibilities. Spend some time really refining your ideas.

 

Sketchbook Research

Working across two adjacent pages on your sketchbook;

​

Fill your pages with a series of design ideas, each showing your understanding of how to make use of each of the individual design principles listed below.  You can also create a series of thumbnail sketches and brainstorm a variety of ways to coil. 

 

  1. Contrast/Variety  - use of a variety of shapes, forms, textures                 

  2. Emphasis - something dominates - a motif or a high point.....                                           

  3. Balance – Symmetrical or Asymmetrical                

  4. Structure – understanding that coil is the structural element
