CHOP CHOP - Personal Identity Stamps

Big Idea: You will want to create your own CHOP to mark your work throughout the year. A Chop is essentially a clay stamp the represents you! You will want to create a meaningful symbol with which to "sign" all your artwork.

ASSIGNMENT:

Create a chop that identifies you as the artist in a way that is meaningful and symbolic.

Remember we will use these for a long time and it will print exactly as you make it so take the time to clean it up well. Decide on the shape you want your chop to be and pre-form it. Allow it to get to leather hard. While you wait begin drawing out several designs and then reverse them (reflect on your sketchbook assignment - personal symbols). Once your chop is leather hard and your design has been reversed you may start carving.

Tips:

  • Don’t forget to reverse your design, so it prints correctly

  • Keep your chop small, it will be easier to impress

  • Have nice crisp edges for more clear impressions

  • Remember the outer shape will show so you could make a round, square, or any other form
